You have picked the colour. Then the paint store asks a question that stops most people cold: which finish do you want?
If you have searched “interior painting near me” while planning a project, you have probably seen matte, eggshell and satin listed side by side. They look similar on a small sample card, but they behave very differently on a real wall. The right choice affects how your room looks, how well it hides flaws and how easily it cleans up.
Here is a plain-language guide to choosing.

Sheen describes how much light the paint reflects once it dries. Finishes run from the least reflective (flat) through matte, eggshell, satin and semi-gloss to high gloss.
Two things to know:
Finish names are also not standardized. One brand’s eggshell can look a little different from another’s, so always check a sample on your own wall.
Matte has very little shine. It gives walls a smooth, modern look and is the best of the three at hiding imperfections, which makes it a smart choice for older walls with uneven surfaces.
Best for: bedrooms, adult living rooms, ceilings and low-traffic areas.
Watch out for: scuffs and marks. Matte is generally the least durable of the three, and scrubbing can leave shiny spots or wear the finish. Newer washable matte paints have improved this, but they still do not match higher sheens in busy spaces.
Eggshell has a gentle, low-luster glow, named for the surface of an egg. It is slightly shinier than matte and more washable, yet it still keeps a soft look and conceals many minor flaws.
Best for: living rooms, dining rooms, hallways with moderate traffic and most general wall areas.
Watch out for: heavy moisture and constant handling. Eggshell cleans more easily than matte, but it is not as scrubbable as satin.
Satin has a smooth, subtle lustre, a bit like the fabric it is named after. It is more resistant to scuffs, stains and moisture, and it wipes clean more quickly than eggshell. The trade-off is that it highlights surface problems more, so wall prep matters.
Best for: kitchens, bathrooms, kids’ rooms, laundry rooms, entryways, doors and trim.
Watch out for: poorly prepped walls. Dents, patches and uneven drywall joints will show under satin.
| Finish | Look | Hides Flaws | Durability | Ideal Rooms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matte | Flat, velvety | Best | Lowest | Bedrooms, ceilings, adult spaces |
| Eggshell | Soft glow | Very good | Medium | Living and dining rooms, hallways |
| Satin | Smooth sheen | Fair | Higher | Kitchens, baths, kids’ rooms, trim |
Ask yourself three questions:
Many homes use more than one finish: matte on ceilings, eggshell on main walls and satin on trim, doors and bathrooms. Our interior painting services cover each of these surfaces in one project. It looks intentional and performs better than one finish everywhere.
Our wet climate means condensation on windows and in bathrooms for much of the year, so choose a moisture-resistant finish there and make sure the room is well ventilated. Grey winter days can also make colours look cooler and flatter. Test a large sample in morning, afternoon and evening light before you commit.
The best finish still depends on good prep. Cleaning, patching, sanding and priming are what make any sheen look smooth and last.

Have questions before starting your painting project? Let’s make things a little easier.

Eggshell suits most walls because it hides flaws well and looks soft. Satin is better for busy, humid or messy rooms because it is more durable and easier to clean.
It is not the best choice. Bathrooms see steam and splashes, so satin usually holds up better, provided the room is ventilated.
Usually, yes. Trim and doors take more touching and cleaning, so a higher sheen such as satin is common.
Often a little more per gallon, but the difference is small compared with the labour involved in painting.
